Working holidays

Working holidays are a great chance to spend some of your time with us enhancing the Scargill estate and taking care of this special corner of God’s creation – our 90-acre estate, woodland and gardens.

Who can help on a working holiday?

Anyone! As long as you’re aged 18 or over and you think you’re fit enough.

What’s involved?

You’ll spend about half the time working, which is reflected in the half-price cost of coming. On Monday to Friday holidays we work in the mornings, leaving afternoons free to relax or join in with whatever is happening in the house. In the evenings you could join the evening entertainment or perhaps take a leisurely stroll to the pub! On weekends we work a full day on Saturday with Friday and Saturday evenings free as well as Sunday morning when you could choose join the Community and other guests for a service in the chapel.

So it’s hard work, but there are plenty of opportunities for fun and sharing something of life’s journey as we enjoy each other’s company in this beautiful place. We need help with specific projects, such as:

  • Pruning
  • Stump removal
  • Preparing the ground for planting
  • Strimming, raking and scrub removal to encourage wildflowers
  • Bracken-bashing
  • Woodland management

In bad weather, we help with refurbishing community or guest accommodation.

When are the working holidays?

Working holidays are scheduled well in advance, either mid-week or over a weekend. In our programme you can find details of forthcoming holidays.
