We understand that food is important to people on many levels and so we aim to provide good, sustainable, hearty food which can be enjoyed by everyone.
We recognise that the environmental impact of meat is significant and so two evening meals a week are vegetarian. Our vegetarian food is excellent so you could use this as an opportunity to try out vegetarian food for the whole week, and so lessen our environmental impact even more. Just let us know when you’re booking.
Our menu is varied and we source locally whenever we can, here are examples of some of the suppliers that we use and our reasons for choosing them:
- Birchall Foodservice – family business, proactive in reducing their carbon footprint
- Class One Greengrocers – family business, locally sourced produce and ethically and sustainably minded
- Barkers Yorkshire Butchers – meat sourced locally from the Dales with focus on high animal welfare and traceability
- Kingdom Coffee – fairtrade and ethically sourced coffee roasted in the UK
We love our planet and know that through our food we can make a real difference.
Special Dietary Requirements
We try to cater for every dietary need, so please let us know of any special dietary requirements when booking. When you are here then just let the community member serving you know that you have a special diet and that you have told us and they’ll collect your meal from the kitchen.
When you enjoy a meal at Scargill, it will have been prepared by community members who form our Kitchen Team, and you will be served at your table. We serve water with every meal but you are welcome to bring your own drinks, such as wine (although perhaps not at breakfast!).
The Dining Room
Our dining room is moderate in size, bright and airy. Dining is family style, with 6 or 7 people at a table. In the evening your food will be brought to your table by a member of the community who will serve you and sit with you. You’re our guests and we hope that this is a time to get to know one another a bit better.
Breakfast
In the week, we offer a wholesome and plentiful continental breakfast including cereals, fruit, yoghurt, croissants – and as much toast as you can eat! Programmed weekend and midweek breaks include an English breakfast on at least one day.
Lunch
Lunch is usually buffet style – perhaps home-made pizza, soup, quiche, jacket potatoes with various fillings and salads. Fruit and yoghurts are always available, as well as left over puddings.
Dinner
Dinner is a two-course set meal, followed by coffee. The menu is varied and well-balanced. We always serve a delicious pudding, but for those of you who would rather, we also offer yoghurts and fruit.
