Sometimes through the circumstances of life we have an extended break from the hustle and bustle of everyday to read, study and listen to God. We call this a sabbatical.

If you are taking a sabbatical you’re very welcome to come to Scargill House for a period of time from 2 weeks to 3 months.  When a person is on sabbatical they experience life at Scargill and can connect with the rhythm of life of the community.  There are generally two options for people who want to come to Scargill House on Sabbatical:

Option 1 – Extended Personal Retreat

Come to Scargill to take some time out to read, pray and listen, with perhaps a little involvement with guest and community life. As a rule you are welcome to attend any appropriate teaching sessions and to join in with our daily rhythm of prayer and our community evenings. For this you would usually be charged the normal rate per night less 20% discount.

Option 2 – Working Sabbatical

Come to Scargill and work alongside the community on one of our teams. You will work for approximately 5 hours per day with two days off each week. This will allow time for reading and reflection or to arrange to attend any appropriate teaching session. There is some flexibility as to periods of work and retreat time.

You are welcome to join our daily rhythm of prayer and our community evening pathway groups.  You would live in a volunteer room and you would not have to pay anything. If you wish to make a voluntary donation towards food and running costs, we suggest £10 per day. You will be required to apply for a Basic DBS on arrival.

If you’re like to come to Scargill on sabbatical then do get in touch.

A few things to note:

  • All requests are discussed with the Director of Scargill Movement. If you wish to meet with a member of our Pastoral Team, that can be arranged.
  • Normally we are only able to welcome one or two people or a couple at a time.
  • Those who opt for a longer stay need to fill in an application form.
  • Those seeking to come from overseas under option 2 would only be able to do so if they have a British Passport, residential rights for UK or a visa that allows them to volunteer for a charity.

Most people who come here on Sabbatical find it a very positive experience, whichever scenario they choose. In order to take this forward please do get in touch with the personnel team.
