Scargill is an international christian community and our vision is:

  • To renew and serve the church (through conferences, holidays, retreats and events for local churches)
  • To build community
  • To be God’s welcome (to those who come and stay with us)

We are an international community committed to having members from inside and outside the UK. We are supported by an excellent team of regular Working Friends. We live and work together on the site and with lots of encouragement and support, from each other, we have a shared rhythm of life. We share experiences; we share our lives with both guests and volunteers.

Scargill draws from the experience and wisdom of traditional monastic communities as we reimagine intentional christian community for a twenty-first century world.

What does community look like?

Work teams

As well as our community and guest commitments, everybody belongs to one or more work teams and has a particular job: House, Admin, Kitchen, Estate, Pastoral and Maintenance.

How long?

We have no permanent positions on Community. We encourage individuals to join for a year as this extended period of time gives time for growth and stability, although some have come for shorter and longer periods and many extend their stay. All new Community members have a 3-month probationary period. If you are a volunteer who is part of our International Community Volunteer Programme, your visa will usually be for one year.

Hospitality

We seek to be experts in practising hospitality to all our guests who stay with us and the many visitors. We mix with and live alongside our guests, praying for them, joining in with some activities every week and eating many of our meals in the communal dining room.

DBS

All community members require a basic DBS check and those who work with children require an enhanced one. If you live outside the UK then you must be able to obtain a Criminal Records Disclosure equivalent from your home country.

Diversity and inclusion

We are very much committed to developing a diverse, inclusive community. We will treat everyone equally irrespective of sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender reassignment, marital or civil partnership status, age, disability, colour, race, nationality, ethnic or national origin or political beliefs.
