Join us as we explore the stories behind the music and words of some of our great hymns, and learn what encouraged those who created them. We will ‘travel’ round Britain with a hymn book, hear of the work of women hymn writers, and consider how folk tunes inspired Vaughan Williams’ hymn tunes. We will be stirred by the work of other composers and writers, including hymns composed in our own lifetimes. An opportunity to sing some of these, will also form a key part of each session. John and Chris are both published authors, and share a lifelong passion for church music.

John was a headteacher for 25 years, and later a part-time inspector of schools and lecturer with the Workers’ Educational Association. He is president of his local cricket club, and secretary to the local history society. Chris is a trained musician, an honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Leeds, and a former Chair of the Scargill Movement Council.
