The ‘wild card’ is one that turns itself into whatever is needed to win a game of cards. Paul the apostle would have understood
the basic principle. Since his conversion he seems to have been fiercely ready and willing to identify closely with any and all
non-believers if it led to the creation of a new convert. How far was he prepared to go? He wrote: ‘I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some’. Two questions: How did Paul’s spiritual integrity survive his adaptability, and could we do with a few more wild cards?
