Because the Bible was written with patriarchal cultures where men and women’s lives were often characterised by dominance and subordination, people often accuse the biblical writers of reinforcing those gender patterns. But a closer look at Scripture reveals something very different. Elaine will be looking at many biblical characters who were led by God to challenge their culture, like the five daughters of Zelophehad who rejected male-only inheritance patterns, or Pilate’s wife who intruded into affairs of state. They give us a much more radical understanding of God’s will for human
relations.
Elaine is a philosopher, sociologist and theologian.
