Job Summary

The job is both exciting and challenging as you will be responsible for general and specific work around the Buildings, Gardens and Woodlands. This role is perfect for someone who loves unexpected challenges, has a wide variety of practical skills and can lead a continuously changing team well.

Key Responsibilities/Duties

  • Supervise the work of the Estate Team including scheduling work and projects
  • Enjoy tackling practical problems when they arise and to use ingenuity and skill, and that of others, in solving them
  • Oversee and carry out preventative maintenance and minor repairs in all areas of the building and its grounds
  • Planning ahead for nessesary maintainance throughout the seasons
  • Engage with others, internally and external, who have more practical expertise
  • Actively manage over 90 acres of woodland
  • Be aware of and responsible for the Health & Safety standards and procedures required for using and storing a range of equipment
  • Be able to carry out risk assessments for a range of maintenance tasks
  • Facilitate training for other community members in Health and Safety procedures and risk assessments
  • Work with and be responsible for an agreed budget

Qualifications/Skills

  • Exceptional people skills to enable, encourage & motivate your team and to recognise their potential
  • Relevant experience in at least some of the areas of
    • General building & maintenance work such as carpentry & decoration
    • Heating systems including biomass boiler
    • Electrical systems
    • Fire systems including helping in regular fire drills
    • Plumbing systems and private water supply
    • Other plant equipment
  • Good level of computer literacy
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English both verbally and written to people of all nationalities with English as their second language
  • It is desirable for candidates to have relevant formal qualifications
  • Good physical health is required as much of the work to be undertaken will be outdoors and can be of a heavy nature

You will report to the Operations Manager and will be involved in a regular operations meeting to discuss the day to day running of Scargill House. We offer comprehensive on-the-job training and opportunities to expand your skills as part of a supportive team. This is not a salaried position. You will receive accommodation, all your meals and a monthly personal allowance.
